Golf Tournament benefits Bret Harte

Golfers from around the area opened the month of June last Saturday by competing under beautiful weather in the 11th annual Jeff Sanders Memorial Golf Tournament at Forest Meadows in Murphys.
The tournament is named after former Bret Harte student Jeff Sanders, who passed away due to an "aggressive strain of influenza" 12 years ago. According to the tournament website, the money raised at the tournament goes to a scholarship at Bret Harte to "benefit deserving Bret Harte graduates." The tournament this year raised $2,500.
"It was our biggest tournament yet," Darlene Sanders said.
The winning team of Dean Hunt, David Berry, Jon Menzes, Mike Sanders, and Brandon Sanders finished with a score of 38.0. Chris and Jon Stoy, Gary Morton and Bred Gray came in second with 39.7. Chuck Filson, Rich Cathcart, Paul, John Overton and Walker finished third with a score of 40.2.
Mike Robert for the men and Minda Filson for the women were the winners of the longest drive competition.
Closest to the pin winners were Brandon Sanders, prize hole,on the second hole; Mike White, $100.00 money hole, on the seventh; and John Brophy, $100 money hole, on the 12th and prize hole on the 14th.
Bruce Gordon got a hole-in-one on the third hole.
Jacob Airola, Courtney Shires, and Tess Soracco each received a scholarship award of $750.
